5 Reasons the Nick Foles Signing is a Good Thing

The Sports Table

The Saint Louis Rams have officially inked a deal with Nick Foles for the next two years. Foles, who was just recently traded to the Rams for former quarterback Sam Bradford, signed a two year deal worth 24.5 million including 14 million being guaranteed. Rams fans from all over are letting their voices be heard, with both positive and negative reactions, but, here are 5 reasons why the Nick Foles signing is a good thing for the Saint Louis Rams.

1. High School and College
Nick Foles' track record begins way before his days in Philadelphia. Foles was a two year Varsity starter for Westlake High School, where Pro Bowl Quarterback Drew Brees previously attended. In his two years there, Foles passed for 5,658 yards and 56 touchdowns, torching records held by Drew Brees. His play during his high school days were good enough to land him scholarships across the country, but he ultimately decided to attend Big 10 power-house, Michigan. After transferring to Arizona, he beat out would be quarterback Matt Scott, and ran away with the starting position. In his senior season, threw for over 4,000 yards and 28 touchdowns. All of this success in high school and college gave him the opportunity to be drafted in the third round by the Philadelphia Eagles.

2. His early success
Foles did not wait long to get his NFL career running, even though he was competing against the once legendary Michael Vick. As a rookie, Nick competed in seven games, six of which were NFL starts. In his seven games, Foles averaged 242 passing yards per game...Sam Bradford's high was 241 yards per game. Without Bradford, the Rams typically averaged less than 200 yards per game in the air. In his second season, Foles took over the starting job just six games into the season. In his ten starts, he finished with 27 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He threw a touchdown pass on 8.2 percent of his passes! The Rams quarterback position averages a touchdown pass on less that three percent of their passes since 2008. It's time for a quarterback who can finish in the Red Zone and Nick Foles is the guy. Not only was Nick Foles invited to the Pro Bowl that year, he was named the Pro Bowl Offensive MVP.

3. The Deal Itself
The deal is for two years at 24.5 million total and a reported 14 million being guaranteed. So basically, were giving Nick Foles 14 million and then 12.25 per year over the next two years. The 14 million guaranteed is right at the average for a good NFL quarterback and 12.25 million per year puts Foles out of the top 20 paid quarterbacks in the NFL. We are paying a guy who had 27 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in his sophomore season, top 25 QB money and no one can complain about that. Not only is it great money wise, but it is nice for Foles to know that he isn't playing for his contract or his life here in Saint Louis. He knows now that he has security and can continue to grow with the coaching staff and players.

4. Nick Foles has Fire and Will
When was the last time we as Rams fans had the pleasure of watching a Quarterback with talent, fire, and a will to win? I know, Sam Bradford had the talent, but he lacked the it factor. Austin Davis had fire and a will to win, but lacked the talent to bring everything together. Nick Foles is finally going to be the quarterback that we deserve. He has the talent, as he showcased with 27 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, he has a will to win, and he especially has fire. I still can recall a game last season where Foles was running up and down the field to get everyone into line for a play, they were able to get the play off just in time, resulting in a touchdown and a game winner. During his rookie season, he beat two Redskin defenders to run in the game-winning touchdown. These are just a few of the examples that Rams fans should get used to seeing over the next few years.

5. Because, who else is going to play?
I understand that some people do not believe that Nick Foles is the savior of the franchise, the man to keep the team in Saint Louis, etc. But, he is better than any other option we have tried thus far. In his short career, he has posted much better numbers than Sam Bradford ever did. In his sophomore season, he threw for more touchdowns than Austin Davis, Shaun Hill, and Kellen Clemens did combined over the last two seasons. Nick Foles is the starting quarterback for the Saint Louis Rams and all Rams fans should be excited when they hear that.

Unconventional Approach

With the countdown for the 2015 Home Run Derby fast approaching, contestants are finalizing their plans. A huge part of those plans is to find a pitcher to throw balls that are meant for the stands, typically a teammate, friend, parent, sibling, coach, or any other relation to a contestant. With less than a week left until the Derby and no pitcher yet, Kyle Knisley has taken to Craigslist.

Blockbuster Trade : McCann for Francik

6/30/2015

Comments

Monday's move was as puzzling as it was surprising for just about anybody who wasn't involved in the deal.

The Cardinals traded outfielder Tyler McCann to the Athletics in exchange for Tony Francik, seemingly out of nowhere.

McCann found his way to the Gateway Baseball Club after previously playing for the similar Weasle Baseball League only a few years before. He was placed on the Cardinals when the new team format went into effect, and has done excellent since. He was in second place in home runs (4) on the first place team in the NL, behind teammate Corey Knisley. His last game with the Cards was on June 13, the first game at the new home field.

Despite the great start, the team announced Monday that they would be swapping McCann for Tony Francik, who made a name for himself last season. Francik had a red-hot September last year, and earned a spot in the 2014 Wild Card game, but was upset by Tommy Wheeling in what has been called the most unexpected win of the Postseason. With perhaps a chip on his, Tony has been off to a decent start as well, with a home run in his first 3 games.

Cardinals captain Kyle Knisley has said that the move was made to better distribute leadership throughout The Club. "Tyler had mentioned being a team captain when the new format was being drawn up, but we thought he might be too new at the time. Since then, it's been evident that he'd make a great captain, and someone we'd like to have in a leadership position in the American League."

With McCann's move the the American League, Jeremy Freese is stepping down as A's captain, allowing McCann to fill the role, making sure a no-trade clause was in place for he and third teammate David Lankford until the All-Star Break of 2016, insuring the new captain could not immediately trade away the team that Freese put together.

The McCann-Francik trade is the first major trade with the new format, but we're sure it will work out well.

Home Run Derby Plans Come Together: Logos Released!!

5/20/2015

The 2015 Home Run Derby is starting to come together, and we couldn't be more excited! While the Club still searches for a unique supplementary event, and hopes to have a Jr. Home Run Derby, there is one addition that is for sure... the first ever GBC All-Star Game.

Now, as opposed to being voted into the All-Star Game, such as the case in the Major Leagues, the Gateway All-Star Game will feature all of the players in a National League vs. American League game. At the end of the game, players will vote on who will receive the titles of AL and NL All-Star, essentially a "player of the game."

We are still waiting to see what other events will occur July 10-12, but this will certainly be the most exciting Home Run Derby weekend yet!

A Complete Format Change...

5/20/2015

Comments

Beginning this weekend, we will see a brand new format for the Gateway Baseball Club. Previously, each player represented a Major League team, and sides were chosen just before game-time. The new format shakes things up, and adds new dynamics to the season.

There are now teams of 3 players, who will always be together and will share a record all season long. Teams may be combined during a game, but their records will remain independent. A team must have at least 2 of it's 3 players present in order to record a win, and the absence of a team will result in a loss, as opposed to having no change to their record as was previously the case.

There is no doubt, this new format will add a sense of teamwork and cooperation, as well as insure a VERY exciting Postseason! See the new roster, organized by team, here.

Big Changes for the 2015 HRD

The 2015 Home Run Derby is in all-out planning mode, as official plans are expected to be completed soon. The new rules, however, are in place. The third annual Mid-Summer Classic will be the first to have a "wood bat only" rule. While this had been discussed in the past, only in the last couple of months was it officially decided on and put in place. This will also be the first year that the GBC will be expanding the number of hitters to 8, instead of the previous 6.

Gateway Baseball president and 2015 host Kyle Knisley weighed in on the decision to expand the Derby. "We made the decision to expand the roster to eight this year because there is so much competition, especially in the National League. Of course, you want to see everybody in the Derby, but the point is to have the very best home run hitters out there." This decision was made following a lengthy discussion among GBC organizers. "With the growth our club has seen, it just makes sense to grow the Derby as well. Making it to the Derby is supposed to be an exciting thing, so we don't want to make it too easy. At the same time, this is the goal, to see growth in the club, and to be able to get four of your best hitters from each league and still know that there are other guys that are great hitters that didn't make it."

Below are the official rules for the 2015 Home Run Derby. More details can be found here.

Home Run Derby Rules

The Home Run Derby consists of 8 of the Gateway Baseball Club's most powerful hitters (4 from each league), as voted on by "Gateway Nation." The Derby winner from the previous year is guaranteed a spot in the contest the following year. In addition, the winner of the 2015 Home Run Derby will also earn his league home field advantage in the 2015 GBC Championship.

Each player will supply their own pitcher. This can be a parent, sibling, friend, coach, or anybody the player chooses. Contestants will alternate by league (in order of least votes to most), with contestants from the hosts league filling the even numbered slots, providing a sort of "home field advantage."  Hitters will compete in a traditional playoff system, in which the players with the most home runs advance to the next round, with the bottom half of the contestants being eliminated in each round. Each player gets 10 "outs" per round. In this event, any swing that does not result in a home run is considered an "out." Should a tie exist at the end of any round that affects the elimination of any player, the tied players enter a "swing-off", allowed only 5 swings, regardless of whether or not they are home runs. Should it remain tied, another "swing-off" takes place, this time allowing only 3 swings. If still tied, sudden death swings occur, with players alternating until one hits a home run. In this event, a batter from the league of the host will go first. If multiple players involved in a sudden death situation are from the same league, the player with more regular season home runs will go first. The home run count will be reset after each and every round. The player that continues on and hits the most home runs in the final round will be declared the winner. This year, only wood bats will be permitted.

What do you think of this year's changes? Let us know in the comments below!

Power Outage in the GBC

5/1/2015

Comments

Players, fans, and Power With A Purpose donors can all agree that the 2015 season has started slow in term of offense. 5 games into the season, the club has a single home run, and that took place in the first inning on Opening Day (2 others occured, but by non-regular season players).

For some, this slow start seems unusual. Collectively, this is the slowest start to a season offensively since the club's inception in 2013. For others, though, this is on pace with every other season. 2014 NL Champion Kyle Knisley is no stranger to slow starts. Last season, he recorded his first home run of the season on July 5, a mere 7 days before the Home Run Derby. He would finish the season with 6 (second most in the club), with an additional 4 during the Postseason, thanks largely to a surge at the end of the season.

It may be impossible to blame the lack of offensive flair on the hitters, however, because it's not only home runs that are down. A majority of the runs this season have either been scored via walk, or the runner that scored was put on base by walking. There is clear evidence that it could be the pitching, not the batting, that is struggling so far this season. Corey Knisley is widely considered the ace of the Gateway crew, and even he has seemed to have a slower start this year than in the past, losing one game by walking in the winning run. Even he has had more success than others, though. Last week, Chris Bequette and Joe Baker both found themselves in sticky situations, with Bequette allowing 4 runs in the first inning (largely due to walks), and Baker walking the bases loaded and shrinking a three-run lead to one before escaping the inning with bases loaded, barely leaving the lead intact.

The club will hope to turn things around tonight and end the "power outage", but only time will tell.

The Astrodome Adventure

3/23/2015

A few years ago three men sneaked into the abandoned Astrodome in Houston, and they’re just now releasing photos from their adventure.

The sports complex, which KHOU-TV reports is “dubbed The Eighth Wonder Of The World,” has been empty since 2008.

“After making it in through a gap in the fence, we were stunned to find out that we snuck in on led straight onto the field,” the user going by astrdome713 wrote on Imgur. “It’s kind of hard to tell, but you can see that all of the lights were on in the main hallways which we thought was strange, but definitely helped us explore!”

He added that he and his buddies weren’t there to vandalize or steal anything on the property but just “to see how the ol’ dome was doing!”

Take a look at the images from their journey here!

Joe Stinebaker, spokesman for the Harris County judge, told KHOU that people caught breaking into the Astrodome will be prosecuted. He also warned of the structure’s “inherent danger” in its current state.

In December, there was a new proposal for how to repurpose the Astrodome, which was named a national treasure in 2013, according to the Houston Chronicle. This plan suggested turning the structure into an indoor park complete with zip lines.

It’s not the first time plans have been pitched to reuse the Astrodome. According to a recent article by Smithsonian Magazine, “[t]he Astrodome isn’t saved — but somehow it isn’t gone. It’s the perfect avatar of its time, big enough to hold our space age optimism and allay our space age fears.”
