So far, the 2014 season has been riddled with injuries. From season-ending injuries that require surgery like Brendon Henson's torn meniscus, to minor injuries like Kyle Knisley's finger ligament seperation that left him benched for only a couple of weeks, and everything in between. Now, Zach Corley is the latest GBC player to be passed up on game day due to injury.
Friday night, Corley suffered a dislocated shoulder during a recreational football game... just a month after dislocating it a first time. Luckily, this is not typically a very serious injury, and we can hope to see Zach out on the field again this season. Time is winding down this season, though, so only time will tell! On March 19, 2014, the Gateway Baseball Club announced the arrival of Brendon Henson, a powerhouse at the plate who was originally meant to take over the cathing role held by Tommy Wheeling. He was scheduled to leave for military duty in May, but would play the first portion of the season before leaving, with a potential return before the playoffs began.
Henson was quick to impress during the winter warm-up, and when the season began, he showed the early signs of a potentially key player, despite back-to-back losses to open up the season. Unfortunately, those two losses would be the only two games Henson would play all season. After only a couple of weeks of action, Brendon injured his knee during military training. Initially, there was no idea how long he would be out, but after a couple of doctors appointments, it became evident that Brendon Henson had more to worry about than a couple of weeks out of the lineup. After being diagnosed with a torn meniscus, he was placed in a full leg brace for the summer. His military ship date was pushed back, and he was considered finished for the 2014 GBC season. Despite an appearance in the 2014 Home Run Derby (on an injured knee), it's now official that we will not see Brendan Henson on the field again in 2014. Brendan and fellow players do remain optimistic, though, for a full, healthy season in 2015, but only time will tell. At the beginning of this month, concept art was shown of what could potentially be the 2015 Gateway Baseball Club jersey. While the details of the design were not finalized, the Club had decided to stick with the Teamwork brand jersey, but with updates to the text on the chest, as well as swapping colors between the AL and the NL. While things seemed to be set and an order was ready to be placed for a single "concept" jersey with the new supplier, the GBC now finds itself back at square one and shopping for a company to produce the jerseys.
After being told that the current supplier, EpicSports could not produce the new design, St. Louis Custom Gear became the next choice, as a personal favorite of some of the players. Unfortunately, they too said that they could not produce the type of product the Club was looking for. The St. Louis Dugout then became a serious candidate, with the idea that the club would order blank jerseys through the manufacturer, and then have them decorated at the St. Louis Dugout, who said that they could handle the job. The local sporting goods store Johnny Mac's, though, could cut the production time in half by ordering and decorating the jerseys all themselves, which in turn made up the minds of the men in charge of coming up with the new jerseys. However, due to slow communication, the GBC has turned its attention back to the St. Louis Dugout, in an attempt to see if they can make arrangements similar to that if Johnny Mac's and reduce their original expected production time. More calls and decisions are expected to be made this week, but in the mean time, players are left only with a piece of concept art. The ice bucket challenge has made it's way to the GBC!!! Watch here... A while back, a creative firm based out of St. Louis, Missouri called Grain, Inc. created a short video that not only showcased their creativity, but also highlighted daily life in St. Louis. While only a couple of minutes long, the video showed scenes from almost every traditional St. Louis location imaginable, from the Gateway Arch, to the City Museum, and of course… Busch Stadium. The video went viral among the Midwest, and gave viewers a renewed sense of community and pride in their city. Right now, those values are nowhere to be seen. The Gateway to the West is in pieces right now following the controversial shooting of Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer and the riots that have ensued because of it. Tensions are higher than ever, and the eyes of the nation have fallen on St. Louis, Missouri in the worst way possible. You may have seen the video before, but a reminder of the beauty of St. Louis could never hurt… especially now. Here is St. Louis. Welcome to the new "Gateway Nation" page!! This is where we will post the latest in Gateway news, as well as a lot of fun content. Be sure to check back often, and stay connected to Gateway Nation!!
